The Camargo-Bracuí Case – Partners

This research brought together professionals from institutions committed to revealing the historical truth of this great enigma and undeniable crime from the era of slavery, under a modern and impartial interpretation.

The archaeologists of the Laboratory of Archaeology of Aquatic Environments at the Federal University of Sergipe (LAAA – UFS – @laaa.ufs), Paulo Bava de Camargo, Luis Felipe Santos, Julio Cesar Marins, and Gilson Rambelli, who is considered the pioneer of Underwater Archaeology in Brazil. LAAA is the representative of the Slave Wrecks Project in Brazil.

From the Laboratory of Oral History and Image at Fluminense Federal University (Labhoi/UFF) and the Passados Presentes Project, historians Hebe Mattos, Keila Grinberg, Thiago Campos, Monica Lima, and Camila Agostini participate, under the coordination of historian Martha Abreu, professor of the Graduate Program in History at UFF, researcher at FFP/UERJ and at CNPQ. All the researchers have long-standing experience with studies in the fields of slavery, memory, and cultural heritage, including in Angra dos Reis.

The Quilombo Santa Rita do Bracuhy is represented by quilombola members Marilda Souza Francisco, Jussara Adriano, and Raissa Souza, who bring valuable oral history data from the descendants of Africans brought on board the brig Camargo, and extend the project to the community.

The documentation of the project is carried out by Aventuras Produções e Edições Educativas Ltda., a company specialized in projects on science, nature, and sustainability. Among its works, Aventuras produced the first Brazilian IMAX film, which was exhibited in museums in 40 countries. Filmmakers, divers, and sailors Yuri and Vera Sanada, and producer Rogério Umeoka are directly involved in the project. Brazilian producer Yuri Sanada is a fellow member of the Explorers Club of New York, famous for supporting scientific and historical research around the world and even on the Moon.
