Archaeology that Redefines History

AfrOrigens is a major archaeological project dedicated to the study of the African Diaspora in Brazil.

For hundreds of years, millions of Africans were enslaved and forcibly brought to Brazil on different types of ships, under inhumane conditions, to serve as laborers in the work that built the wealth of this nation.

This ambitious research initiative seeks answers to questions that remain concealed and aims to bring to the broader public, in Brazil and abroad, the debate on the Atlantic crossings and how some of the shipwrecks of these slave ships stand as material evidence proof of these crimes against humanity.

The Quilombos, from their earliest formations to their present circumstances, are deeply connected to these “ships of death” and represent an essential part of this research and documentation.

The data collected by AfrOrigens will be made available to other institutions, such as the Truth Commission on Black Slavery in Brazil.

"Take part in this project, drawing on the past to build a more inclusive future."
